Adjustment of the MDAO Problem Formulation using Sensitivity Analysis to Reduce the Computational Cost within Aircraft Design

An increasing demand to develop sustainable solutions and technologies within the aerospace industry and the extensive amount of data within each engineering discipline of aircraft design, has advanced the development of the Multidisciplinary Design Analysis and Optimization (MDAO) technology. Utilizing MDAO in the aircraft design process allows to obtain an improved design from a holistic point of view by capturing and including the interactions between different disciplines in the design problem. This thesis investigated on how to adjust the MDAO problem formulation with the use of sensitivity analysis and thus to consequently alleviate the computational expense of MDAO problems. This thesis achieved to contribute a new approach to the existing literature on how to adjust the MDAO problem formulation by developing and subsequently incorporating a sensitivity analysis tool into the sequencing and decomposition algorithms of KADMOS (Knowledge-and graph-based Agile Design for Multidisciplinary Optimization System), a software that is used within the MDAO formulation phase.
