Stations as Nodes
In order to cope with rapid urbanization and to create a sustainable economic growth, a polycentric network of rail-metro stations (or nodes) of different sizes is suggested for large European cities. The research is dealing with the following themes: the role and function of the station of the future, growing number of users, sustainability challenges, resilience and inclusiveness of node developments, urban integration and integration in the overall mobility system, heritage and spaces for culture, analysis on mobility trends and its implication on the design of the node.
Ultimately, the study of large-scale interventions as a station project brings the research to stimulate a new debate on the role of design - in the architecture and urbanism discourse - when exploring the project definition phase of complex projects characterized by the engagement of multiple actors and different domains.
PhD projects connected to this theme explore the impact of node developments as catalysts of urban transformations, the integration of new sustainable mobilities and the livability with public spaces at station areas, the role of big-data/Ai in complex interventions and new relationships between architectural design and digitalization (urban data) for an integrated urbanization strategy.
