Laboratory of Generative Systems and Sciences in Architecture and Built Environment
Genesis Lab is a laboratory for researching and developing physical, mathematical, and computational modules for generative design-build systems and design games. The lab focuses on digital design applications ranging from design optimization to industrial mass-customization in use-cases such as affordable quality housing.
Digitalization of modular building design and construction processes based on the logic of assembly, aggregation, or dry stacking of modules is investigated in the lab by exploring and exploiting the potential of discrete mathematics and digital twins. The technological mission of the lab is to develop open-source scientific computing methods and tools for topological design, combinatorial design, mathematical design optimization, form-finding, and spatial decision-support. Genesis Lab promotes three types of generative design for digitalization of the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry:
- scientifically deducing designs from given functional requirements,
- systematically exploring the possible discrete and modular configurations, or
- devising ‘generative design game sets’ for co-creating designs through algorithmically structured interactions of designers, cyber-physical design modules, and users.
The educational mission of the lab is to develop didactic tools and instructional materials for teaching the rudiments of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science to the students of Architecture & Built Environment and provide training for developing digital design tools.
The general approach of the lab towards its goals is mathematical, digital, explorative, and participatory. The computational approach of the lab is based on discrete mathematics, namely: Combinatorics, Graph Theory, Agent-Based Models, Algebraic Topology, Computational Geometry, and Numerical Computing. Practically, the lab provides the space, expertise, and machinery for prototyping modules and physical models for generative design and construction, or for conducting computational simulations. Additionally, the lab provides support for generative design research or graduation projects as well as the courses Earthy: Generative Design for Earth and Masonry Architecture and Spatial Computing in Architectural Design. Building on a track record of digital Open-Science and Open-Education, Genesis Lab welcomes inter-disciplinary collaboration and provides academic or industrial consultancy and training on making bespoke digital tools for Architecture & Built Environment.
