Local Identity: Dune Inn

Many buildings in the Netherlands are visually similar and are missing a local identity. This project is about determining a local identity and showing how this is translated into a building. The project proposes to design several inns throughout the Netherlands to show the differences in identities. In order to determine a local identity, I researched: raw materials, landscape, climate and architectural expressions. This research created the conditions for the design. I designed one inn located in the dunes of The Hague. All aspects are linked to the location. For example, the inn is concentrated around a courtyard, which is a reference to a dune hollow (duinpan). The materials used are the ones that can be found around the inn, in ratio to the amount that they are available. Through the conditions, the identity of the inn is becoming one with the location.
