Expanding universes on shrinking footprints / 3 scales

Expanding Universes on Shrinking Footprints

While cities densify and fill up with building mass, it is of great importance to pay high attention to the twin-phenomena of public and private. People should feel at home not only inside their dwelling but also outside the building - in the city itself.

The relevance of “Expanding universes on shrinking footprints” lies within the contribution towards future densification developments, which focus specifically, on how urbanism, architecture, and landscape can merge various typologies to accumulate functions and space.

The project consists of a toolbox dealing with architectural tools that create the in-between and a site-specific intervention in Amsterdam. The design is an integral part of a ‘Green Loop’ proposal, addressing scares and future-plans of the city. Stretching over the Ij, it merges 3 main typologies - housing, cycling bridge, and park - in one hybrid building type. This approach allows densifying on an unconventional building site while introducing new qualities to the inner city of Amsterdam.
