Rethinking Waste: Urban integration of waste collection and treatment systems based on circular concepts

How can we integrate the conceptual circular economy within complex urban systems, like Amsterdam? Circular economy can be used to improve residential waste collection and treatment to close loops and reduce environmental impact. Amsterdam has many spatial challenges related to its urban growth and therefore a new more integrated waste system is needed. In this way, the city can live up to its high circular ambitions and reach their set goals in a short time frame. A link between circular economy and urban design is essential to conquer these challenges. Circular concepts can be translated into systems, creating the possibility for the integration and connection to different urban forms and systems. This study shows that circular economy can evolve into an economic, social and environmental concept, spatially integrated within our daily lives. In this way, more awareness among residents is created and social and economic benefits can be achieved.
