During her opening speech, founder of the institute Professor Isabel Arends introduced the three themes that the BEI will first focus on: biomass-based products, environmental bioengineering and bioengineering for health.  Then, in the symbolic presence of spiritual fathers Antoni van Leeuwenhoek, Martinus Beijerinck and Gijs Kuenen she officially declared the institute open.

Keynote speaker Clive Brown, chief technology officer at DNA sequencing specialist Oxford Nanopore, introduced a new device for DNA sequencing during his presentation.

As a thank you for his lecture, he received a handmade, working replica of the Van Leeuwenhoek microscope - the same microscope of which the secret was recently unraveled.

Also on the programme was the BioDate, a special speed date for 45 scientists from all faculties, who went in search of interdisciplinary graduation projects for master students. At the Bioengineering Expo, companies and scientists presented their innovative work in the field of bioengineering.

Participants in the kick-off could also register for various lab tours. In the photo the lab tour to ME, where 3D-printed, self-folding materials were shown that can be used in medical implants.
