Dr. M.O. (Matthias) Willen
Profile
After completing a Bachelor and Master in Geoscience/Geophysics at the University of Jena, I started a PhD in Geodesy at TU Dresden in 2017. There, at the Chair of Geodetic Earth System Research, I investigated and developed methods combining satellite gravimetry and altimetry data to quantify ice-sheet processes and glacial-isostatic-adjustment effects. I received my doctorate
(Dr.-Ing.) with "summa cum laude" in early 2023. In June 2023 I started as a Postdoc advised by Bert Wouters in the Department of Geoscience & Remote Sensing.
Research
Linking nicely with my PhD-related research, I continue to focus on combination methods using satellite gravimetry and altimetry observations to detect mass change signals in Antarctica and Greenland. The aim of the research is to resolve mass change processes in space and time in order to study the ice sheets’ response to climate change in more detail. I really like using gravity measurements in my research because they are so inclusive with respect to any mass signal.
