Research & Projects

The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) carries warm and salty water to the north. At deep convection locations this water is densified. As a result the water sinks and returns south in the deep western boundary current of the AMOC. The main aim of this PhD is to quantify the interplay between eddies, ocean convection, sinking and spreading of these dense waters from the Nordic Seas to the global ocean. To study this region, simulations will be performed with a regional, high resolution, ocean model, which will be developed during the PhD using the MITgcm.
