Pantelis Karamitopoulos holds MSc and PhD degrees in geoscience from Heriot-Watt University and Delft University of Technology, respectively. He has investigated the functioning of river systems at various spatial and temporal scales in order to understand the makeup and architectural arrangement of river-borne sediments and improve subsurface property prediction in the Netherlands, Bolivia and other parts of the world. Next to his academic experience he has worked as a Geoscientist at TNO and the Geological Survey of the Netherlands.
His research interests lie in sedimentary systems, geophysical methods for subsurface characterization, soil-structure interactions and geomodelling. His current project aims to improve the process of assessing structural reliability of the historic quay walls in the city of Amsterdam. He combines existing and new geophysical and geotechnical measurement techniques to extract information about the surrounding soil conditions behind quay walls. His project is a collaboration between the Hydraulic Engineering department at TU Delft and the Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions (AMS).
