M.J.C.M. Hertogh

Professor Marcel Hertogh (50) is full professor and head of the research group Infrastructure Design and Management of civil infrastructures at the faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences at the Delft University of Technology. The research group focusses on project management of mega  projects engineering asset management and building information modelling.

He is the chairman of DIMI: the Delft Research Initiative ‘Infrastructures and Mobility’, that facilitates and coordinates research and education on infrastructures and mobility for the 8 faculties of the TU Delft. DIMI is directly accountable to the Executive Board of TU Delft. He is also strategic advisor realisation at Rijkswaterstaat.

Professor Hertogh studied civil engineering at TU Delft and economics at Erasmus University Rotterdam, obtaining master degrees in both. He did his PhD at Erasmus University (social sciences) and ETH Zurich (project management) on ‘Playing with Complexity, Management and Organization of Large Infrastructure Projects’. He is (co)author of 8 books on design, management and organization of large projects: infrastructure and urban development. He wrote numerous articles and essays on design and management of infrastructure programmes, corridors and projects.

Professor Hertogh was responsible for two large research projects for the European Commission on the realization of the Trans European Network for Transport. He was a project director himself of a new railway line (€ 1 bn.), and set up the organization of several mega projects (rail, water, environment). He restructured the rail freight line project Betuweroute (€ 5 bn.). He researched 25 infrastructure mega projects in Europe (up to € 10 bn.), such as Gotthard and Lötschberg Base Tunnels, West Coast Mainline, several new high speed lines, highways and waterways, for which he developed an ‘Infrastructure Assessment Tool’, that is currently used for assessments. He initiated the network Netlipse for knowledge exchange on large infrastructure projects, and was programme director. Since his start at TU Delft, he became the scientific director. He carried out second opinions and set up the organisation of large-scale urban development, water and environmental projects. He was Head of research group PPP and governance at Knowledge Institute Transumo (transition towards sustainable mobility). He was director at Berenschot Osborne/ AT Osborne. Currently he is managing partner at Triple Bridge B.V. that focuses on sustainable energy, infrastructure and water.

Marcel Hertogh
