Cooperative Urban Driving Strategies

Subject

Cooperative driving has attracted considerable attention as a new approach to improve both road safety and efficiency of traffic operations on urban roads. This research is able to improve higher traffic efficiency by considering signal control and longitudinal behaviours.

Scientific challenges

One of the scientific challenges is the difficulty to design a signal control system that could adaptively adjust signal parameters in response to information from connected vehicles. Correspondingly, another challenge is the complexity to build a simulation scenario to test and validate the designed signal control system.

Societal relevance

The study aims at gaining a fundamental understanding of driving behaviours and traffic operations at signalized intersections and developing an integrated approach for intersection design and control with cooperative system. The proposed strategies are designed to increase capacity at signalized intersections and have an advantage over mitigating traffic congestions on urban roads.
