Traffic Dynamics Modeling and Control Lab

Besides the conventional questions in the field of traffic dynamics modelling and control, the current technological and societal developments give rise to a range of new questions. How does road traffic behave, and how does automation change traffic dynamics? What can we learn and how can we benefit from more detailed traffic measurements, and from the possibility to individually advise drivers or control vehicles? How should we manage traffic to serve individual differences in valuation travel features, such as differences in value of time? How can we keep traffic management fair, and according to a given policy? How should road traffic be modelled and controlled on various levels, ranging from local to network-wide, in order to reduce delays, emissions, and energy consumption?

With such questions in mind, the Traffic Dynamics Modelling and Control Lab aims at the development of knowledge and methods that help to make road traffic processes efficient, safe, sustainable, personalized, and consistent with policy. To achieve the above aim, this Lab uses methods such as mathematical modelling and analysis, data analysis, control design, and simulation.

The knowledge is developed in cooperation with students, with researchers from other labs or other universities, and with practising professionals. Knowledge is shared through teaching in various MSc courses, publications in journals and at conferences, and publications in general media.

In order to perform theoretically well-founded, practically applicable, and societally relevant research, the Lab seeks inspiration from the contacts with road authorities and industry, and continually searches for possibilities to verify or applied the developed theories and methods in practice.
