S.F. (Silvia) Varotto

Profile

Silvia joined the Transport and Planning Department in January 2014 as a Marie Curie Fellow in the project “HF-Auto: Human Factors of Automated Driving”. Silvia has been visiting researcher at Universität de Bundeswehr München (Germany) and at Technion Israel Institute of Technology (Israel). She carried out her master thesis at Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (Switzerland) and holds a Laurea Magistrale in Civil Engineering (2013) from Università degli studi di Trieste (Italy).

Research

Silvia is in the process of finalising her dissertation, titled “Driving Behaviour in Control Transitions Between Adaptive Cruise Control and Manual Driving: Empirics and Models”. Her dissertation focuses on two innovative aspects in driver behaviour modelling: predicting drivers’ decision to activate and deactivate full-range Adaptive Cruise Control (control transitions), and describing drivers’ behaviour before activation and after deactivation (transition period). The modelling framework proposed is underpinned by data collected in driving simulator and on-road experiments.
