Rain Sense

Sensors and Citizens preparing Amsterdam for Future Weather

On the 28th of July 2014, a cloud burst in Amsterdam again showed that heavy rainfall in the city causes floods and water damage. Proving reliable information about local rainfall intensities and locations where problems might be encountered, is crucial to minimize damage.

In the research project RainSense, we develop a “living weather sensing lab” in Amsterdam where sensors and civilians collect current and detailed information about rainfall and water damage, In the lab, innovative sensing techniques such as using mobile phone mast to predict rain fall and mobile sensing umbrellas, are being tested. Furthermore, smart city experiments are going on to test social sensing techniques where weather and water information is being collected with smartphone apps.
