NICHE-KEN-212

Innovative ways of learning, demonstration farming and water management for enhanced food security and income generation in coastal regions

Pwani University is an agricultural university at the coast of Kenia. In this highly populated area (close to Mombasa) the water scarcity is growing. In a lot wells the salinity increases and the abstracted water can no longer be used as drinking water for  human and cattle. The University of Delft is collaborating with Pwani  University to implement a course on sustainable water management. With this course also blended learning and distance learning is introduced. To show the students sustainable water management in practice, two demonstration projects are build: One student hostel is made self-supporting with respect to water with a combination of roof catchment for drinking water production, brackish well water treatment with RO for drinking water production and waste water treatment for production of irrigation water. Also a small farm will be turned into a sustainable water demonstration unit.
