Track: Geoscience and Remote Sensing

Our Earth is changing, in particular due to the growing world population, urbanisation, land use, and climate change. How will this affect our daily life, and how can we improve our understanding of the underlying processes? We need more and better information to answer such questions.  How can advanced technology, such as satellites and remote sensing, be combined with state-of-the-art modeling tools, to give us the understanding that we need to make the right decisions for the future? These are only a few questions that form the basis of the MSc track Geoscience and Remote Sensing (GRS)

If you have interest in atmospheric sciences, natural geophysics, climate change, geodesy, or any other geo-science related topic, and consider a career in those high-profile disciplines, you may want to consider this MSc track. Depending on your background, interest and career perspectives, the program will lead  to a diploma either in Civil Engineering or Applied Earth Sciences.

Programme

The MSc track Geoscience and Remote Sensing offers high flexibility in designing a personal program. This is achieved by defining a limited core program, consisting of generic courses on observation theory, understanding system earth, and data collection technology. These courses result in a thorough background, with a skill set that is attractive to any TU Delft engineering graduate. Apart from this core program, students choose a personalized curriculum, selecting the courses needed for their personal and career interests. Three main areas of interest can be distinguished:

  • Natural Geophysics: understanding how the system earth functions, analysis of the results of the newest satellite missions, natural hazards such as earthquakes or volcanoes.
  • Atmospheric Sciences:  weather, meteorology, atmospheric chemistry, clouds and radiotion, air quality and aerosols, climate change
  • Geodesy and Remote Sensing: surveying, GPS for positioning and navigation, Remote Sensing, and acquiring and analyzing geo-data

Climate Change and Natural Hazards are cross-cutting themes of the program, based on the Delft approach: the societal debate on climate change should be based on empirical results and their interpretation. This is a unique feature of this track.

A study program in the geosciences is not complete without fieldwork. The program contains a two-weeks fieldwork period. The goal of the fieldwork is to gain experience with data gathering, designing measurement networks, and quality assessment and control (QA/QC). The fieldwork will be conducted on Iceland, in close collaboration with students of the University of Iceland and the Icelandic Met-office.
