Master programme (MSc)

In densely populated countries such as the Netherlands hundreds of kilometres of traffic gridlock, air pollution, traffic accidents and delayed public transportation are all part of the daily fare. The MSc track Transport & Planning trains people to play a central role in resolving such problems. T&P engineers, for example, work on clever ideas to manage traffic flows and prevent congestion, they develop public transport systems or develop infrastructural plans. A characteristic of the topics on which they work is that these are often in the news and are high on the political agenda.

Programme

Within this track quantitative approaches to infrastructural planning play a central role, along with the analysis of systems for personal transportation and for road and rail traffic.

The programme offers a challenging combination of professional practice and state-of-the-art research. Amongst other things you learn:  

  • How infrastructural planning is directly linked to economic growth and decline
  • How to model environmental activities, analysing and translating them into traffic questions on infrastructural networks
  • How to design both individual components and complete networks for road and rail infrastructures
  • How to model peoples’ choices, as well as the influence of transport systems on the choice of destination, the form of transport, the route and the departure time
  • How to manage traffic flows with, for example, systems for dynamic traffic management
  • How you can describe traffic movements mathematically 

In European top 5

If you opt for the MSc track Transport & Planning in Delft, you will be studying at one of the top five European traffic research institutes. An institute which strives to bridge the gap between research and practice and which, for this reason, works closely with authorities and companies.

The master track Transport & Planning of the MSc Civil Engineering focuses on infrastructure, passenger transportation, and road and railway traffic. Key characteristic is the quantitative approach: we model the transport system in order to assess its performance and its effects. These models are used to develop new and innovative measures in the field of transportation.

The curriculum of the MSc track Transport & Planning consists of three parts: 

  • Compulsory courses (60 ects) which offers you a broad perspective of the field of Transport & Planning plus the necessary background knowledge and capabilities. A small set of courses allows you to specialise in topics you prefer by choosing two out of six of them.
  • Electives (20 etcs) which you choose from MSc-courses offered by Transport & Planning and any other MSc-courses. Other options are an internship (CIE4040-9, 10 ects, experience how it is to work in practice), an interdisciplinary project (CIE4061-09, 10 ects), and an individual research or design assignment (CIE5050-09, 10 ects).
  • MSc-Thesis (40 ects) (CIE5060-09) where you demonstrate you’ve mastered the knowledge and skills taught in this MSc on a Transport & Planning topic you can select yourself.

Annotation Rail Systems

For students having a special interest in railways systems there is the possibility to obtain an Annotation Rail Systems within the regular MSc-programme of Transport & Planning. Requirement for this annotation are a number of courses you can select from the T&P-electives as well as from those offered by the Railway Engineering Section. And obviously, railway systems should be the theme of your MSc-thesis. 
The Annotation Rail Systems has two compulsory courses: CIE4872 Railway operations and control and CIE4874 Elements of railway engineering. Electives offered by Transport & Planning are CIE4811-09 Planning and Operations of Public Transport Systems, CIE5803-09 Railway Traffic Management, and CIE5811 Transport Safety. The Railway Engineering section offers the following courses: CIE4870 Structural Design of Railway Track, CIE4873 Wheel-Rail Interface, CIE4871 Design and Maintenance of Railway Vehicles, CIE5875 Railway Asset Management, and CIE5874 Mechanical and Material Engineering in Railway Asset Management.

New MSc-programme Transport & Planning in 2018

We are currently working on a redesign of our MSc-programme. Main idea is to reduce the number of compulsory courses and thereby allowing students to focus more on terrains of their interest: Transport Networks, Traffic Systems, or Public Transport and Rail Systems. Unfortunately it proved to be unfeasible to start the programme in September 2017, therefore it has been postponed till September 2018. Further details will be published in September 2017.
