CEG PhD Council
PhDs make up the largest community in the CEG faculty. In the Council we represent PhDs in the decision making processes of the faculty and share experiences amongst the PhD community. The Council consists of representatives from all seven departments of CEG who meet on a biweekly basis.
PhDs can reach us to seek advice or report complaints via the shared email PhDcouncil-CEG@tudelft.nl. Alternatively, individual members can be contacted directly by using the contact details listed in the Members section below.
Goals
- We provide clarity to PhDs about general concerns of the CEG departments or changes imposed by the CEG and TU Delft Graduate Schools.
- We communicate issues, ideas and solutions to the department and faculty boards, the faculty Graduate School, the University PhD Council and the Works Council.
- We organise activities to enhance cooperation and spread knowledge within the PhD community.

I am looking forward to constructive meetings and new ideas with all of the council.

Pursuing a PhD is not an easy task. Apart from the fact that it challenges you intellectually, it can become an overwhelming and lonely process. Many students are studying away from their homes or they are lacking motivation. The PhD council works as a support mechanism that aims to solve all these commonalities among the PhDs. It is geared towards helping each other and I personally see it as an outlet for all the PhDs to share their concerns, fears, and complaints. That is why I wanted to be part of it.

The journey of every PhD candidate at CiTG is without any doubt one of the most exciting ones in your life, but nevertheless full of ups and downs. That’s why it is important to be in a supportive and healthy environment, but also in an environment where issues can be voiced clearly. For this the PhD-council is the interface between the singular PhD candidates and the management of the faculty. I am happy to serve as a conduit for any problems you are facing. Besides current problems I believe, that no system ever will be perfect and thus am motivated to continuously improve the situation everyone in the faculty works in with regard to the ever changing socio-economic and socio-ecologic circumstances. Should you have any ideas or suggestions, please do not hesitate contacting me.

The first step in academia is definitely conducting a PhD and building our research skills. However, it is crucial that we communicate, share and interact with fellow PhD students and the rest of the staff members. I would like to act as a bond between different disciplines as we all have a common ground of communication. Apart from that, I approach this task as an opportunity to familiarize myself with discussing and managing difficulties that a single PhD student or a group of students have. Feel free to contact me for discussions and suggestions!

Doing a PhD is generally a very enjoyable experience, we get to learn a lot, we get a lot of freedom to design our own research and the TU Delft is a very social environment. However not everybody experiences the PhD like this. By joining the PhD council I hope to improve the wellbeing of my colleagues by tackling topics such as stress, mental health and diversity & inclusion. Because everybody should be able to enjoy their PhD experience.

In general, our time as a PhD is a time with multiple highlights. For example, you publish your first paper, go to conferences with your fellow PhD candidates or join PhD activities. Unfortunately, a PhD can also get quite bumpy, affecting both your work and personal life. I hope that during my time in the PhD council, we can reduce these stress factors and add some more highlights to our time as PhD candidates.
