In the centre of The Hague and 'around the corner' from the current Parliament, TU Delft opened its new location in The Hague for the new strategic programme TU Delft | The Hague. TU Delft | The Hague is designed with the aim of better involving state-of-the-art engineering in political and executive decision-making, policy-making and implementation. The TU Delft | The Hague programme has three focus themes: Climate & Energy, Digitalisation and Safety & Security.

Een delegatie van het J.M. Burgerscentrum heeft de petitie “Alles stroomt in Nederland” aangeboden aan de Vaste Kamercommissie voor Onderwijs, Cultuur en Wetenschap (VKC-OCW) in de Tweede Kamer in Den Haag. Er wordt gevraagd om erkenning van het belang voor Nederland van de ingenieurswetenschappen, in het bijzonder van de stromingsleer.

Building a better society is the mission of the university in the context of Science, Engineering and Design. That’s what TU Delft stands for. More attention to Lifelong Learning (LLL) fits within this ambition and involves providing high-quality, accessible education to professionals.

The recent news is abundantly clear: severe weather, yellow code alerts, and water damage in large parts of the country. Due to climate change, we can expect more heat and drought, but also more rainfall in a short period of time.

Monday, May 22 2023, during Biodiversity Day, TU Delft is launching a collaboration with Waarneming.nl to make the TU Delft Campus more green and vibrant. René Hoonhout and Tim Tabak from EcoCampus gave tours to students and staff to discover and capture plants, animals and organisms on campus. Monitoring the biodiversity is an important part of the sustainability ambition of the TU Delft to be carbon neutral, climate-adaptive and circular by 2030 with a focus on improving biodiversity and quality of life. René Hoonhout: "We are moving towards a nature-inclusive way of management. By making observations, we can measure whether this contributes the improvement of biodiversity."

A major challenge in the energy transition is the efficient and flexible storage and transportation of renewable energy. Batteries will play an important role in this. However, much research and innovation are still required. In order to encourage this, on Thursday 11 May 2023 TU Delft will be launching e4BatteryDelft: a brand-new platform that will focus on electrochemical storage of renewable energy – with respect for the world around us, in a way that is affordable and also totally European.

Solar energy is the cheapest and most accessible form of energy. Now, it will be more efficient than ever.

Professors Marileen Dogterom, Herman Russchenberg, Jilt Sietsma and Peter Vink all received royal honours on 26 April 2023.

A dart that is less sensitive to player errors and is therefore almost 50% more accurate than a conventional dart. TU Delft researchers may have developed a groundbreaking dart that can significantly improve the performance of elite-level darts players.

Two protein complexes carry the major responsibility for the spatial organisation of chromosomes in our cell nuclei. DNA tension plays a surprising role in this. Together with Austrian colleagues, nanoscientist Cees Dekker and his PhD candidate Roman Barth of the Kavli Institute of Nanoscience at TU Delft now publish how they have visualised this in detail in Nature on April 19.

DNA replication is the process whereby cells make an exact copy of their DNA before cell division. A key part of the intricate DNA replication machinery is a molecular motor called CMG, which has the vital task of separating the two strands of the DNA double helix so that they can be copied. An interdisciplinary team of researchers from TU Delft has now developed a new methodology to assemble and image the motion of CMG with unprecedented resolution.

On 12 April a number of covenants were signed in the presence of Minister Robbert Dijkgraaf of Education, Culture and Science and his French colleague Sylvie Retailleau to intensify the collaboration between both countries in the field of science. One of the covenants focuses on the collaboration between TU Delft and French universities and businesses. For TU Delft this represents an important step in terms of research into sustainable aviation.

The board of NWO Domain Applied and Engineering Sciences awards funding to seven research projects through the Open Technology Programme. Three of the total seven proposals have been awarded to Delft researchers. In total, NWO is funding the projects with 5.8 million euros, companies involved and other organisations are investing 900 thousand euros.

Modular homes that can be quickly adapted to a family situation, cleverly reusing rubble as building material for temporary housing, setting up emergency shelters in tent camps in such a way that communities can still be together. With such housing solutions and designs came 50 students from TU Delft after an education week on earthquake-resistant building and architecture after humanitarian disasters.

TU Delft is ranked 13th for Engineering & Technology in the QS World University Rankings by Subject published on 22 March 2023. TU Delft also made the top 20 in nine of its specialisations.

Delftse wetenschappers en studenten die onderzoek doen naar de biomechanica van het hart en bloedvaten werken samen met cardiologen, neurologen en radiologen van het Erasmus MC in het CardioVascular Biomechanics Lab (CVBL). Currently, thousands of affected residents of Turkey and Syria are bivouacking in the icy outdoors without basic necessities. As is often the case in a disaster zone, there are insufficient suitable shelter or emergency locations to accommodate all those affected by a disaster. At the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment, a team of students and experts took the initiative to use their expertise to design a modular shelter.

From March 9, 2023 to April 21, 2023, all Dutch citizens can advise politicians on climate policy through the National Climate Consultation. Through the so-called Participatory Value Assessment (PWE in Dutch), researchers will enable Dutch citizens to provide the House of Representatives with advice.

Four researchers join forces and knowledge at renewed Heat Square of The Green Village

Record temperatures, floodings and melting sea ice: radical weather events are becoming more frequent and have a devastating effect on our planet and our lives. By accelerating the energy transition and climate action TU Delft, together with its partners, tries to prevent climate change and contain its consequences. With the election of the Best Climate & Energy Paper, TU Delft is highlighting a number of large and small innovations that contribute to this.

The Dutch Research Council (NWO) has awarded five TU Delft researchers a Vici grant of up to 1.5 million euros. This will enable them to develop an innovative line of research and further expand their own research group for a period of five years. Vici is one of the largest personal scientific grants in the Netherlands and is aimed at advanced researchers. A total of 34 Vici grants were awarded.

Deltas and coastal plains are attractive places to live: fertile, flat, and open to the sea. These lowlands are, however, also vulnerable to climate change and sea-level rise. It was announced today that Δ-ENIGMA, a project focusing on this formation of the delta landscape, is one of the projects that will be funded from the National Roadmap for Large-Scale Research Infrastructure (LSRI) call of the Dutch Research Counsil (NWO)

Increased use of the subsurface, for example for geothermal energy production or subsurface storage, is crucial for achieving the (inter)national goals for greenhouse gas emissions. Today it was announced that EPOS-eNLarge, a research project that focuses on efficient and safe use of the Dutch subsurface, is one of the projects to be awarded through the Dutch Research Council (NWO) Large-scale Research Infrastructure call. The 10-year project will receive 17.9 million euros from NWO.

Universities will use standard deal term principles for the transfer of intellectual property to spin-offs.

Cancer patients can often find it difficult to maintain a good overview of their situation. This is why Ingeborg Griffioen, a Delft industrial designer, developed the Metro Mapping design method for patients and care providers, to enable them to reach better shared decisions about treatment. Experts in design engineering from TU Delft are now joining forces with medical professionals and researchers from Erasmus MC and the LUMC and the Panton design agency to further develop and apply Griffioen’s method in the Netherlands, Denmark and Spain.

The Dutch economy must be fully circular by 2050 to help stop climate change. But our society actually uses more disposable plastic packaging and we use furniture and garments for shorter and shorter periods of time. This was stated by the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency's biennial report on the circular economy showed last week. Within Europe, the Netherlands does lead the way when it comes to recycling, but we still do so largely "low-quality," according to the report. We turn plastic packaging into garden benches or roadside posts after recycling, for example, but not often enough our recycling leads to new plastic packaging.
