The Master’s programme in Science Education and Communication is meant for you if you have completed a Bachelor’s degree in one of the natural sciences or technology subjects. If you would like to communicate about and provide advice on your own field of study and be a link between science and technology and society. If you want to deepen and broaden your knowledge of your own discipline and, in addition, want to discover the new field of study that is Communication Design for Innovation.

We work on real practical communication problems in small groups. This takes place in a community or practice in which we closely collaborate with professionals on complex innovations. There is lots of interaction during the courses and you can contribute your own ideas and experiences. The method of testing is mostly papers and exercises, and sometimes written examinations.

The programme consists of 60 EC Communication Design for Innovation courses. The remaining 60 EC consist of more deepening or broadening courses in your own field of study. The programme is customised, so it is possible to make your own choices regarding your programme. After completing the programme you will get a Master of Science degree.

An internship is a part of the study programme. We also recommend doing your graduation project in a company.

As Science Education and Communication is a technical university degree programme, the courses focus predominantly on theories, design and engineering. Skills such as writing and presentation, and a media training course are interwoven with the courses.

Other universities:- Universiteit Utrecht focuses more on journalism and informal education and the general public.
- Rijksuniversiteit Groningen investigates the interaction between science and society with a focus on science shops and the general public.
- Wageningen University & Research is focused on innovation but more from the point of view of social studies of science and linguistics.
- The focus of the Vrije Universiteit (Amsterdam) is on interaction with the general public through dialogue and engagement.

Yes, the master’s programme is wholly taught in English.

Students in the MSc SEC, track Communication Design for Innovation preferably achieve higher scores on English Language proficiency tests than candidates for admission to other Master’s programmes at TU Delft.
- A TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of at least 90 (internet-based test)
- Or IELTS (academic version) overall Band score of at least 7.0

The Master’s programme in Science Education and Communication is accredited as a 4TU master’s programme by NVAO (Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands & Flanders).

120 EC means a full-time study load for two years. Communication courses are scheduled on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The courses require that you also work on assignments outside the scheduled class hour. You can always set up a customised programme and study planning together with the academic counsellor to make sure you are able to do all the science & technology and communication courses within the planned 2 or 3 years.

Ordinarily, applicants seeking admission to the MSc programme in Science Education and Communication must possess a Bachelor’s degree in one of the natural sciences or technology subjects related to those taught at Delft University of Technology.
For students who do not meet these requirements, it might be possible to follow an individual pre-master programme. Please contact the coordinator for more information at info-sec@tudelft.nl.

It is not possible to do an official dual-time programme. It is possible to spread out your courses over a longer time, but you have to remain registered as a full time student.
