Alan Hanjalic - Delft University of Technology

Alan Hanjalic is head of the department Intelligent Systems at the Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), Delft, The Netherlands, and founder and head of the Multimedia Computing Group. He received his Ph.D. in 1999 from the Delft University of Technology and his Diplom-Ingenieur (Dipl.-Ing.) degree in 1995 from the Friedrich-Alexander University in Erlangen, Germany, both in Electrical Engineering. He was a visiting scientist at Hewlett-Packard Labs in Palo Alto CA, USA, in 1998, a research fellow at British Telecom Labs, Ipswich, UK, in 2001, and a visiting scientist at Philips Research Labs at Briarcliff Manor NY, USA, in 2003, as well as at Microsoft Research Asia, Beijing, China, in 2005. In the time period 2017-2021, Prof. Hanjalic is active as an invited international expert in the Project 111 of the University of Electronic Science and Technology China (UESTC), Chengdu, China.

Simone Stumpf - City University of London

Simone Stumpf works as senior lecturer at City, University of London, where she researches designing end-user interactions with intelligent systems. Her current projects includes designing user interfaces for smart heating systems and smart home self-care systems for people with dementia or Parkinson’s disease. She is also interested in personal information management and end-user development to empower all users to use intelligent machines effectively.

Engin Bozdag - Philips

Engin Bozdag works as privacy engineering lead at Philips, driving the implementation of  the new European privacy law (GDPR) at Philips worldwide. He also works as a senior researcher for 4TU Centre for Ethics and Technology. Previously Engin was a privacy consultant working for PwC, contributing to projects in various sectors. Engin holds a PhD degree from TU Delft. His PhD project focused on algorithmic bias, filter bubbles and the impact of online services such as Facebook and Google on democracy and society

Magdalena Wojcieszak - University of California Davis

Magdalena Wojcieszak is an Associate Professor at UC Davis. Prior to joining UCD she was an Associate Professor at the Amsterdam School of Communication Research, University of Amsterdam, where she holds an affiliate position as the PI the ERC Starting Grant “Citizens exposed to dissimilar views in the media: investigating backfire effects.”

She examines how people select information in the current media environment and the effects of these selections on attitudes, cognitions, and behaviors. She also studies the effects of mass and new media and various message types on outcomes related to intergroup relations. Her current interests include ways to minimize selectivity and biased information processing.

She has (co-)authored 50 articles, is the Editor of the International Journal of Public Opinion Research, and serves on editorial boards. She has received several awards for her teaching and research (including the 2016 Young Scholar Award from the International Association of Communication).

Julio Gonzalo - UNED, Madrid, Spain

Julio Gonzalo (UNED, Madrid, Spain) is head of the UNED research group in Natural Language Processing and Information Retrieval (nlp.uned.es). His research interests include Entity-Oriented Summarization and Semantic Search, Evaluation Methodologies and Metrics in Information Access, Semantic Textual Similarity, and Information Access Technologies for Social Media. He has a long record designing test collections and international evaluation campaigns, including the RepLab Evaluation Campaigns for Online Reputation Management Systems, the WePS evaluation campaign for Web People Search systems, and the CLEF track for interactive cross-language search assistants (iCLEF). He has been co-recipient of a Google Faculty Research Award on the topic of axiomatic thinking for the design of Information Retrieval and Natural Language Processing evaluation metrics.
