Recently, researchers at LUMC Leiden and TU Delft found a way to automatically reset a racing heart through an implanted LED device. Their research, published in the scientific journal Science Translational Medicine, was received with enthusiasm and now even has a chance to win the title of “Best tech idea of 2019”. A prize awarded by the popular science magazine KIJK to the best idea that has emerged in recent times.

LED lamp automatically resets racing heart

Researchers at the Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) and Delft University of Technology have found a way to reset a racing heart immediately and automatically by an implanted LED device. In the scientific journal Science Translational Medicine, they describe how their bioelectronic defibrillator works in the laboratory. It could be the first step towards a pain-free treatment for patients with atrial fibrillation.

No less than five TU Delft will each receive 1.5 million euros from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). Vasiliki Giagka, assistant professor at the Bioelectronics Group at Delft University of Technology, has been invited to the editorial board of Bioelectronic Medicine. The journal asked Giagka for her expertise in fabrication microsystem integration and packaging for neural implants. With her appointment, Giagka is currently one of the youngest associate editors working for the journal.

The new approach can significantly help architects and urban planners to incorporate photovoltaic (solar power) technology in their designs.
