Connecting academia & industry - Roman Kochetov, ABB Corporate Research

Roman Kochetov from ABB Corporate Research will be visiting TU Delft and will be giving a talk on 'Connecting academia & industry' on Monday, 25th of January, from 13:00 and 14:00 at Dijkstrazaal 9.150. The abstract of the talk can be found below:

I will try to answer an interesting question today: Are academia and industry two divergent roads, or are they two sides of the same coin of knowledge? Resorting to my experience, I would state, that from the viewpoint of a Master student- the two ways are equally worthy, and each shall lead to interesting life choices and career consequences. If you choose an education, then you will get a valuable experience being a PhD candidate for 3-4 years. In the end - if you are persistent, hardworking, fortunate and successful, you will be awarded with a doctoral degree and then again, you are at the same crossroad: academia or industry? As a PhD degree holder, for some companies you are possibly overqualified but at the same time it is not easy to find an interesting and suitable postdoc position, commensurate with your unique skill sets. And even if you find a postdoc position for 1-2 years, you have a chance to reconsider your future life and take a shot at working in an industry. In most cases it is the last possibility to choose what you actually want to do in life. Fortunately, I did not have to decide if I wanted to stay on in academia or drastically change everything and turn to industry. I have made my choice to stay on an intermediate road and postponed the decision that I could not make after getting PhD and even after postdoc. My talk is about the research conducted in industry and how the experience gained at TU Delft helps me in my professional career.
