PhD position in Computer Graphics on Rendering

The classic setting of a standard screen, a compute device, and a single user is about to change, with the advent of many-view rendering scenarios.

PostDoc Sail Regatta of the Future
This Postdoc position will be part of a project in collaboration with the Sailing Innovation Center ( www.sailinginnovationcentre.nl/ ), whose goal is to create excitement for the sailing sport by involving modern technologies.

PhD+Postdoc: Multi-view Rendering

The classic setting of a standard screen, a compute device, and a single user is about to change, with the advent of many-view rendering scenarios. Stereoscopic, virtual-reality, augmented reality, multi-view, and soon light-field and holographic displays (to provide correct depth perception) enter the mass market and require many images of the same content. Similarly, other applications, such as remote-rendering with large crowds operating low-performance devices, or complex light transport phenomena (see image) lead to structurally similar challenges. This project addresses the topic of many-view rendering via three research lines with high potential for scientific and technological impact. First, we want to identify and reduce recurring computations. Second, given that the user interprets the image, we aim at reducing costs by exploiting perceptual limitations. Finally, we will conceive novel design tools to build efficient content for many-view scenarios.

PhD: Painting Analysis
A painting is a complex piece of art and its appearance is influenced by many factors; the chemical composition of the painting, aging, variations on the surface, spectral properties, etc. With modern technology, it is possible to extract a large amount of data from an artwork. At Delft University of Technology, several detailed scans, including X-Ray, spectral and chemical composition, as well as surface properties, of masterpieces from famous artists, such as Vermeer, Rembrandt and others (e.g.,  https://www.mauritshuis.nl/en/press/persarchief/2018/intensief-onderzoek-naar-vermeers-meisje-met-de-parel-van-start/) In this project, we intend to put this wealth of information into use. Having access to this data, we intend to develop a computational pipeline covering various aspects, including a simulation of the appearance of a painting, analysis solutions for uncovering how a painting was produced, including a reconstruction of the applied paint and strokes, and synthesis solutions to complete partial data. Hereby, we will, ultimately, come closer to understanding and also reproducing the style of famous artists. The research will combine aspects of rendering for the appearance reproduction, visual analytics solutions to support an interactive analysis, as well as synthesis approaches for the reconstruction combined with domain expertise. Art historians can provide valuable information regarding typical workflows, used color palettes and particularities of certain ateliers (used brushes, used paint etc.), which we intend to integrate into our approaches. Our work holds promise to reveal new findings about famous artworks but also, more generally, to establish a new paradigm for working with data acquired from paintings.

Postdoc: Creative Computer Graphics

In this work, we plan to investigate solutions for creative content production to support the creation of high quality visual content by novice users. The work will combine aspects of computer graphics, perception, and computational photography. The idea is to rely on perceptual insights to improve the outcome of a creation process. The postdoc will be able to investigate several projects, ranging from computational photography, over stereo perception, to interactive style control and transfer.
