Dutch Design Week – Up Close and Personal 2021

Dutch Design Week: it’s one of the highlights of the European design calendar and an event in which IDE design research plays a prominent role together with Design United - the 4TU research centre for design. This year Dutch Design Week will take place from 16 -24 October and once again there are opportunities for Delft Designers to get involved.
In pre-pandemic times, Dutch Design Week meant heading to the exhibition halls of Eindhoven to crowd around design artefacts. In 2020 corona forced the spectacle online. Exhibitions and live performances gave way to websites, livestreams, and social media activity. Some saw this as a pale imitation of the real thing, but a digital Dutch Design Week also offered opportunities for explanation, discussion, and debate – playing well to design research.
Design United opted for five days of livestreamed talk shows and a connected website, exploring five themes - Hybrids, Eco-logica, Living Matter(s), Silent Power, and Crisis! - under the banner of Up Close and Personal. Many IDE research staff and students contributed to its success.
This year Design United plans to delve deeper and expand on these themes. Five days of livestreamed talk shows will be supplemented with a small live exhibition in Eindhoven. More details will follow in early September. However if you already have a thought-provoking design research project and prototype that could be interesting for this year’s event, please send details to Associate Professor Marco Rozendaal. Those projects which fit best with the themes will be invited to participate in the event. Marco’s contact card can be found at the bottom of this page.
Finally, if you are interested in exhibiting a project at Dutch Design Week as an individual, this year’s theme is “The Greater Number” and the deadline is July 1 2021. More information on how to apply can be found here.
