Due to the regulations regarding the coronavirus pandemic, we would like to inform you that the cycling tour of this workshop may be adjusted depending on the regulations at that time. We will inform you with enough time if there are changes. The online cycling lecture will proceed as scheduled.

This workshop consists of two parts: Cycling Lecture and the Cycling Tour.

CYCLING LECTURE

The aim of this workshop is to provide useful and practical information to help international staff members and their partners of TU Delft, ensuring they are prepared for cycling in Delft.

The online lecture will consist of:
a) teaching general information about the Dutch cycling culture and history
b) rules of the road
c) good practices and behaviours
d) right of way laws
e) maintaining a bicycle.

Time in the ‘classroom’ will allow participants to gain a detailed understanding of the rules and theory associated with cycling in the Netherlands. Photos of traffic situations on campus and around Delft will be utilized to make sure the teaching is relevant to the participants. During the interactive lecture attendees are free to ask any related questions and join in to the discussion.

CYCLING TOUR

After attending the Cycling lecture you can sign up for the Cycling tour where participants have a chance to test their skills riding a bicycle. This tour aims to complement the lecture by navigating a range of different junctions and common road situations. At different points the group will dismount and discuss road signage, junctions and different rules in certain situations. In addition, the route will guide participants through Delft and show off its sights. In this way participants experience that they can use their bicycle to discover Delft in an easy and convenient way. We will make sure that the route is customized to the participants needs.

Before we depart for the cycling tour the tour guides will start with a ‘check’ to make sure that all participants are capable of joining the tour. This will take place at the campus away from traffic to ensure people can start their practice confidently in a safe space. In case that someone is not capable of cycling safely we will advise the participant to not join the study tour due to safety reasons.

The ‘check’ will consist of the following:
• Participants bicycles will be checked on being the right size, if the tires are pumped up and if it is in good working conditions. We will have tools on hand to adjust the height of bike seats if and pump up the tires if required;
• To make sure people are safe when cycling in Delft we will check cornering, steering and breaking abilities;
• Additionally, we will check if the participants are able to cycle with one hand, this guarantees they can indicate when turning corners.
