Lunch lecture: Images tell a story too

04 June 2021 12:30 till 13:30 - Location: Online - By: Webredactie | Add to my calendar

Part of Delta Futures Lab webinar series on future challenges of Delta regions.

Date: Friday 4th of June
Time: 12:30 – 13:30 [CET]
Location: online
Speaker: Willem van Deursen
Organised by: Delta Futures lab

Last year Willem van Deursen worked on a project to map hydrology dynamics in Bangladesh. He developed a website showing part of the story. In this presentation, van Deursen will guide you through this information. He will talk about the technology behind time-lapses and the application of Google Earth Engine. Bonus: A walk through the stories these maps tell you. What do the (moving) images mean? Are they just nice visuals to look at? Or do they have a meaning beyond that? What are they telling you about the water in Bangladesh? How do they link to the humans who live in those areas? What can we actually learn from digital maps, how can we read them? Can we listen to their stories?

Bio

Willem van Deursen is an independent expert on integrated water management, working with Carthago Consultancy (www.carthago.nl). Van Deursen has a masters water management from Wageningen University and a PhD in simulation modelling and GIS from Utrecht University. He is working on long-term planning for water related issues such as floods and droughts. Van Deursen works in countries such as the Netherlands, Bangladesh, Thailand, Pakistan. In the perspective of Carthago Consultancy, managing water is about defining ways to improve human conditions and livelihood options in a challenging physical environment. In his 30 years of experience as an independent water manager his focus has changed to a more intertwined approach where he puts greater emphasis beyond purely engineering aspects. He came to realise that water management is only worth its value if it improves livelihood situations of the people involved.

About The Delta Futures lab

The Delta Futures lab is a multidisciplinary network for MSc-students, staff and practice with the ambition to become interdisciplinary leaders in spatial design, engineering and governance of deltas. The Lab unites master students, researchers and professionals in multidisciplinary projects. It enriches and supports master students in becoming the mission-oriented engineers that future delta societies need.

The Friday lunch lectures are on the state-of-the-art and state of the future developments of deltas. The lectures are online and open to all students, researchers and professionals interested in dealing with future challenges of Delta regions. The participants form a broadly international and interdisciplinary group. With participants joining from the engineering, planning and design fields, originating from the Netherlands, Ghana, Mexico, Myanmar and Vietnam.
