Inaugural address Co Verdaas
On 3 July Co Verdaas, professor of Urban Area Development, will give his inaugural address.
With over 17 million Dutch citizens we inhabit 42.508 vierkante kilometers. A quarter of that area lies below sea level, a third of our country is susceptible to flooding. Yet, we are healthy, highly educated, and happy. We do not have ghettos or banlieues where nobody dares to enter. Our infrastructure and public space belong to the best in the world. We live in a planning paradise of our own making.
However, our paradise is never finished, and most definitely not a static entity. On the contrary, our earthly paradise requires us to continuously act. New challenges arise continuously: we need more and different housing, the climate is changing, we want to create a more sustainable economy, we are becoming more mobile, and biodiversity is heavily threatened. To maintain our paradise, we will have to change.
With his inaugural address 'The paradox of the paradise', Co Verdaas outlines an action perspective and a knowledge agenda for the maintenance of our paradise.
