Managing Startle and Surprise in the Cockpit. Promotor 1: M.M. van Paassen (LR); Promotor 2: Prof.dr. E.L. Groen (Cranfield U.).

When an unexpected threat occurs in flight, the ensuing startle and surprise can seriously impair the crew’s functioning. Startle involves a quick increase in stress, whereas surprise occurs with the realization that one’s mental model mismatches with the situation.

Using a conceptual model of startle and surprise, this thesis outlines how this particular combination of task requirements and mental state affects pilot performance. With simulator and in-flight experiments, pilots’ responses to startling and surprising events are investigated, and several different training interventions are evaluated. The findings are promising and provide insights that are relevant beyond the field of aviation.
