Competition in public transport. An exploratory research in institutional frameworks in the public transport sector. Promotor 1: Prof.dr. Prof.dr. J.P.M. Groenewegen (TBM).
This thesis studies the variety of institutional frameworks that exist in the public transport sector and how these develop. Its main focus is the growing and evolving role that ‘competition’ in its many guises has come to play over the last decades. Typologies are developed to improve understanding. Both competitive tendering and deregulation are studied in more detail, discussing various implementations and developments both from a legal and a practical side. Evolving practices and structures are observed as well as discrepancies between institutional structures and institutional practices. The research shows that various institutional frameworks can work and that striving for a perfect realisation of all conditions is illusory.
