Abstract:
A large share of Northern Europe’s renewable energy potential is in the North Sea, mainly in the form of wind energy. While there still are many open questions regarding the design of a North Sea energy system, it will likely consist of a number of hubs that are connected among each other and to the North Sea Countries, as well as by hydrogen pipelines. The existing rules for the design and operation of energy markets will need to change in order to provide economically efficient investment and operational decisions. In this presentation, Laurens de Vries will present an outline of market design challenges and solutions for a North Sea energy system.”

Biography:
Laurens performs research and teaches in the field of electricity market design, analyzing the mutual relationships between the physical infrastructure and its (economic) organization and regulation. He focuses on the relationships between regulation and investment, in particular on how the various policy instruments for CO2 emission reduction, renewable energy, security of supply and network congestion management affect the transition path to a low-carbon energy system. Dr. De Vries has a M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from Delft University of Technology and an M.A. in Environmental Studies from The Evergreen State College and he obtained his Ph.D. Degree from the Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management of Delft University of Technology.
