Practicing science as a theatre performance or (re)writing a thesis in poetry doesn’t seem to make much sense, except that it might be fun to some. If we try it, however, we immediately recognize that this ‘nonsense’ is much more interesting and deeper than you would reasonably expect. It is not only instrumental. It transforms learning.

Teachers will translate a thesis into a poem during a snap-workshop. Afterwards we start triangulating. How do we organize room for this frivolity in our own education? We will watch how some TU-students apply theatre. We also discuss how the neuro-science helps us to understand the influence of theatre and poetry on our learning.

Assistant professor Bauke Steenhuisen started the collective ‘Poetic Engineering’. He produced the theatre play 'Getekend' (translated: ‘Signed’) in 2015 on the TU Delft during the Second World War. After that he experimented with a range of different courses with art-embedded learning in the Honours Programme. And he plays piano.
