Lecture & discussion: Too risky to build?

28 June 2023 19:00 till 21:00 - Location: Maassilo (Maashaven Zuidzijde 1-2, Rotterdam) - By: Communicatie BK | Add to my calendar

On 28 June, the lecture and discussion 'Too Risky to Build? Unpacking the Challenge of Urban Development in Rotterdam’s Unembanked Areas' take place.

The RED&BLUE research program is organizing a panel discussion to unravel the challenge of urban development in the unembanked areas of Rotterdam.

Since 1980, roughly 21,000 homes have been built in unembanked areas in the city not protected by dikes. This corresponds to 75% of the building stock in the outer dyke area of Rotterdam. Looking to the future, the city faces multi-faceted challenges and opportunities: as port activities move westward, more space will become available in the city for redevelopment, including much-needed new construction. But these areas also face flood risk vulnerabilities and face an uncertain future. This raises questions about where and how to build: will the city grow safely or will we create (new) risks by developing outside the dykes? What adaptation strategies exist to grow responsibly and how do we implement them? Join us for a presentation and panel discussion of these questions with key societal stakeholders.
