Postponed: The Future of Our Past

07 May 2023 19:00 till 21:30 - By: Communication | Add to my calendar

Many things get passed down through families, like heirlooms, traditions, hair colour, and secret family recipes. Other things get passed down too, like genetic conditions and, in some cases, trauma can be inherited, as well. During the event The Future of Our Past, we will be viewing the short documentary 'Indo’s Silence’, we will have an interactive conversation about generational trauma and end with a Spoken Word workshop to give words to silence.

Unfortunately, the event cannot take place on Sunday, 7 May. We are looking into a new date when the event will be held. Keep an eye on the website and our social media channels.

During the months of May until July we celebrate our freedom with Bevrijdingsdag on the 5th of May and Keti Koti on the 1st of July, it is also a moment to reflect on these impactful events and how they affect our current lives.

In the documentary, Indo’s Silence, three third-generation Dutch-Indonesian artists delve into their own family history in an attempt to break the generational “Indo's silence.” How does the silenced past influence their present lives? How can they, as a third generation, express what it means to be Indo? The documentary is spoken in Dutch and subtitled in English.

The documentary is a starting point for a conversation about generational trauma. This conversation will be more wide-ranging than the theme of the documentary. What does it means to be of a certain heritage? And what it is like to be the second or third generation after a traumatic experience.

In the subsequent workshop 'Giving words to silence' we focus on the second and third generation. How can you, despite the silence, go in search of your roots, and find out what it means to be of a certain decent, for example Indonesian (as the people portrait in the documentary), or Surinamese? Together with a spoken word artist, this workshop focuses on how to give words to silence.

The programme is as follows:

19:00-20:00 Documentary screening ‘Indo’s Silence’ and interactive conversation

20:00-20:15 Break

20:15-21:30 Spoken-Word workshop ‘Giving words to silence’.
