Innovation is crucial to fulfil the potential of industrial biotechnology for sustainable production of fuels, chemicals, materials, food and feed. Similarly, scientific and technological advances in environmental biotechnology are needed to enable novel approaches to water purification, and ‘waste-to-product’ processes thus contributing to a circular economy. Increased fundamental knowledge encompassing enzymes, microorganisms and processes are essential for progress in this field. The Department of Biotechnology covers this research area and, based on new insights, selects, designs and tests new biobased catalysts, micro-organisms, and processes.

Zoë Robaey nominated as Science Talent 2019Every year, the Dutch version of the popular science magazine New Scientist holds an election to determine who the science talent of the year is. This year, bio-ethicist Dr. Zoë Robaey is one of the nominees. She is a postdoc at the Biotechnology and Society group of the department of Biotechnology and conducts research at the interface of ethics and biotechnology.

Art from wastewater at the Dutch Design WeekThis week, three young designers and the Dutch water boards present Dutch Design made from 'Kaumera'. Kaumera is a new raw material that can be extracted from waste water by means of the Nereda purification process, which was developed in part by TU Delft. All three artists found a different application for the versatile raw material: in porcelain, textiles and woodwork. During the Dutch Design Week, from 20 to 28 October, the exhibition can be seen in the Veemgebouw (stand EFGF).

Mark van Loosdrecht wins Novozymes Prize for 25 years of revolutionary wastewater treatmentThe development of new technologies for biological wastewater treatment is turning our view of sludge upside down. Microbiologist Mark van Loosdrecht receives the 2022 Novozymes Prize for his pioneering work in copying and reusing nature’s mechanisms in wastewater treatment and resource recovery. Super-fast technique measures heme enzyme reaction as it happensResearchers from TU Delft found an unexpected new enzyme intermediate at work in enzymes that contain heme, a cofactor that’s vital for many processes in our body such as the breaking down of toxins in the liver. The researchers used new, rapid techniques, which are less invasive than existing methods. The results, published in ACS Catalysis, increase our understanding of heme proteins and enzymes and how they can be engineered.
