I am very active in the Life Science & Technology curricula from our department. At the bachelor level I coordinate a large practicum teaching the basics of microbiology, fermentation and spectroscopy (course LB1062, 6 EC). This practicum is taught by a team of enthusiastic technicians and PhD students and gives a solid basis to the 1st year students. I challenge the LST master students with the critical analysis of scientific literature in the field of metabolic engineering (course LM3442, 6 EC), in a very interactive and stimulating course. Finally as chair of the Board of Examiners I contribute to the quality of our LST master program.
I also contribute to various advanced courses organized by Biotech Delft.

This integrated practical teaches the fundamentals of biotechnology in two areas: microbiology and fermentation. Students learn to work according to safe microbial techniques and thereby become acquainted with microbial diversity and taxonomy. They learn to work with a microscope, cultivate micro-organisms in liquid media and isolate micro-organisms using agar plates. Students also learn to cultivate micro-organisms in bioreactors and apply calculations taught in the biotechnology course (LB1512TU) to quantitatively describe microbial activity. Metabolites consumed and produced during the fermentation are determined analytically using UV / VIS spectrophotometry, whereby an error analysis is also carried out.
The practical is taught is Dutch and English. Students work in pairs.
This practical runs between February and June.

Metabolic Reprogramming focuses on strategies to optimize industrial micro-organisms and equip them with new functionalities. In this course students are taught fundamental aspects, possibilities, limitations and challenges in the rational optimization of microbial cells for industrial product formation. In this highly interactive course, based on analysis of scientific literature, students also learn to critically read scientific papers and to discuss their contents with peers in a structured manner. In addition to scientific content, attention is given to other aspects of the scientific publications (style, statistics, internal consistency, impact).
