Light phenomena demonstrations at Lichtjesavond

Every year on the second Tuesday of December, the city center of Delft changes into a Christmas market decorated with lights. The event is initiated by the lighting of the Christmas tree in the market square, an event named 'Lichtjesavond' or, loosely translated, 'Night of Lights'. During this event, a market stand was dedicated to show demonstrations of light phenomena to the general public, which was a collaboration of the Optics Research Cluster and the Optics Chapter Delft. A series of scientific demonstrations was presented, related to optics and light phenomena, aimed at children, parents, and general passersby.

Spozmai Panezai joined ImPhys as Postdoc

Recently Spozmai Panezai has joined ImPhys/Rieger group to work on 4pi cryo microscopy at department of Imaging Physics at TU Delft, Netherlands. Her research interest is Light Microscopy, Digital holography, Optical Coherence Tomography and Adaptive Optics.

Gabrielle Laloy-Borgna joined ImPhys as Postdoc

In October Gabrielle started as Postdoc in the ultrasound team. She will be studying ultrasound imaging of bones and of the intraosseous blood flow. Her supervisor is Guillaume Renaud.

Last October, the IEEE-UFFC-S special-topic school on Waves and Transducers took place at Delft University and chaired by Koen W.A. van Dongen from Delft University of Technology. The school was attended by 32 participants from academia and industry who all shared a common interest in ultrasound technology.

GUSTO arrived on Antarctica

GUSTO arrived on Antarctica

NASA’s GUSTO balloon observatory has arrived on Antarctica onboard the Wallops C-130 airplane. It is scheduled for launch around the 15th of December. GUSTO is equipped with three 8-pixel far-infrared cameras delivered by SRON and TU Delft and will carry out the first large-scale survey with velocity-resolved imaging of the spectral lines emitted by three cosmic elements between stars.

Gijs Hooghiemstra joined Imphys as MSc student

Gijs started his master endproject at the KalkmanLab. His thesis is about investigating aberrations in Optical Diffraction Tomography and further developing iterative numerical methods for solving multiple scattering problems.

Maaike Smit will be doing her MSc project as part of the Mars lab, under supervision of Chiara & Kathleen. She will be studying a novel technique to directly measure neuronal currents using MRI.
