Become a Chemical Product Designer
The design-traineeships of Delft University of Technology train you to translate academic developments in Life Sciences and (Bio)Chemical Engineering to real-life applications and industrial products, working to meet the industry’s demand for new technologies. A design-traineeship (PDEng-position) offers an application-focused alternative to a PhD position and provides you with a solid basis for an accelerated start in an industrial career. The programmes are a joint initiative of and are sponsored by the Dutch Life Sciences and (Bio)Chemical industry and the Dutch government.
The traineeships are fulltime, take two years, and you receive a salary as an TU Delft employee.
When you successfully complete one of these programmes, you will receive a certified diploma and be entitled to use the academic degree Professional Doctorate in Engineering (PDEng). This give you a head start for a challenging career in the high-tech and chemical product-oriented industry.
During the PDEng-traineeship “Chemical Product Design” you deepen your domain knowledge in specific areas, strengthen your engineering skills, and acquire know-how about designing these innovative products as well as bringing them to the market.
Most of the introductory year is dedicated to advanced training and workshops in engineering design, social-economic aspects of design, as well as professional and business skills. The emphasis will be placed on the technical integration of disciplines, engineering design in an industrial context, and the recognition of the role technological product design plays in society. The first year will be concluded with a Group Design Project (GDP), in cooperation with industry. Besides the core programme you can select elective training modules.
The second year of the traineeship consists of the Individual Design Project (IDP). The project is performed in, or in collaboration with, the product development department of an industrial partner. The IDP offers the perfect opportunity to apply all your knowledge, acquired during the first year of the traineeship.
Outperform a Master's in industry
Several relevant industries have contributed to the definition of the content and focus of the designer programme in Chemical Product Design, to ensure the significance of the PDEng-degree for your future career. You gain skills that industries require whilst obtaining two years of work experience. A certified designer has in-depth knowledge of design processes, theoretical as well as practical, which clearly distinguishes him/her from a Master’s. Besides design skills, you develop social skills working in multicultural teams. In this traineeship you gain:
- knowledge and experience in multidisciplinary problem-solving
- team work experience
- training in and application of project management
- an extensive academic and industrial network
- the ability to apply your design and economic expertise in an industrial setting
- helicopter view of design methods for chemical products
The examination regulations of the PDEng programma comprise:
- The training regulations. These regulations describe both the training programme in general and the individual programme.
- The rules and guidelines referring to the examination. These rules describe the procedures of (part of) the examination and the ways of judgement. Also the terms to be met are indicated, in order for a candidate to graduate with distinction.
