Dean

Prof. dr. ir. Caspar Chorus

Caspar Chorus has been the dean of the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering (IDE) since 1 September 2022.

Professor Chorus has a long and proud history at TU Delft, inspired by both research and education. He began his academic journey at the Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management (TPM) in 2002. Upon obtaining a master’s degree and a doctorate with distinction at TPM, Chorus joined the faculty’s academic staff. He rose to the position of Professor of Choice Behaviour Modelling at the age of 36 and headed the Department of Engineering Systems & Services (ESS) from 2019 to 2022.

In addition to his research at TPM, Chorus taught several courses and developed a strong track record as a supervisor for MSc and PhD-candidates. He was presented with several teaching and PhD supervision awards. And while he may have stepped away from his role as a teacher, his passion for education remains.

Professor Chorus’ research expertise lies in mathematical modelling of choice behaviour. He focuses on modelling human decision making, with a special interest in finding mathematical representations of non-rational choice behaviour and morally sensitive decision making.

Chorus incorporates elements of design into his research, as sound and empirically validated mathematical models of human decision-making are invaluable for designing better and more human-centred policies, products, and services.

These models, when framed differently, can also help people make better decisions. In a research-through-design process, Chorus’ team explored the use of decision support models by professionals, and the effect they may have on human agency and autonomy.

This latter line of research inspired the creation of TU Delft spin-off company, Councyl. This company, co-founded by Professor Chorus, designs self-learning decision support software for professional organisations, based on choice models.

Prof. dr. ir. Caspar Chorus, Dean of the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering, will act as chairman of the Faculty's management team.
