Mr. Bourgeois, J.
Jacky is a researcher at the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering at TU Delft. With a background in computer science, he explores the exciting interface between Design and the Internet of Things with a focus on personal data. He is especially interested in understanding how designers can effectively and responsibly use personal data to design innovative and relevant products and services.
His research has a strong real-world focus. He relies on methods such as Participatory Data Analysis (PDA), in which he combines qualitative and quantitative data to build rich, multi-perspective understandings of contextual environments in collaboration with the end users. Using data as a core material, responsible and compliant use of data is a pillar of his research. He develops mechanisms to ensure that data subjects remain in control of their data while it is used to its full potential.
During his PhD, he investigated the design of ubiquitous technologies to support domestic energy practices of 'energy farmers', i.e. households that generate their own energy from solar panels. He combined exploratory interviews, participatory data analysis and in-home interventions to get a deep understanding of this context. He investigated two case studies focusing on Energy Demand-Shifting in the context of domestic solar electricity generation around the laundry and the electric mobility routines. His objective was to understand the connection between consumption and local generation and design support for emerging energy practices.
