Dr. Henneberry, Y.K.C.

Yumiko Henneberry is the Program Coordinator of Sustainability at the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering.

At IDE we focus on the societal challenges Health, Mobility and Sustainability to bring a unique way of thinking and working into these application fields. By developing tools and methods which integrate the three main perspectives – people, technology and organisation, IDE is there to focus on the user and user needs and values.

As the Program Coordinator of Sustainability, my goal is to elevate both the academic and societal impact of Sustainability research conducted at Industrial Design Engineering. I manage the cross-departmental coordination within the Sustainability theme at IDE, with other TU Delft faculties, and with external partners.

If you want to know more about working with IDE in the field of Sustainability, please feel free to contact me. And don't forget to check out the profiles of the two other thematic Program Coordinators - Hilbrand Bodewes (Health) and Mignon van den Berg (Mobility).

Academic Background

My PhD was about Hydrology, investigating what happens to mercury over time if it is stored in a wetland environment. Mercury is a "legacy" water contaminant in California thanks to the Gold Rush in the 1850s. I looked at methods to remove mercury from agricultural drainage water and store this in constructed wetlands to help reverse land subsidence (central California actually has some very similar issues to the Netherlands with peat soil and sea water intrusion). These methods were considered by the US Environmental Protection Agency as a viable approach to water quality and environmental mitigation and further pursued after I finished my PhD.

After a short stint in Cleveland, I moved back to California where I worked at a state agency that worked to strengthen linkages between science and policy with a focus on water. I helped facilitate collaboration among scientists and decision makers, and co-led the development of a 4-year science agenda that addressed priority environmental management issues, which was subsequently used as the topical areas for a $17 million proposal solicitation.
