Jiwon Jung is PhD candidate at the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering.

Academic Background

Jiwon is a PhD Candidate of CardioLab, a collaboration between Philips Design and the TU Delft. CardioLab explores how smart technologies can reduce the burden of cardiovascular diseases.

Jiwon is interested in developing design guideline of including large community -level data within the context of Data-Enabled Design process. Her guideline is to support designers to create smart product-service systems. She believes that this community level data can bring systematic and societal level insights (going beyond individual-focused, which current designers are used to).  Then, our design ideas/knowledge can be accepted to broader audience (e.g. medical science, engineering, and business). In one simple sentence, Jiwon develops a design guideline to include large data as another user(societal) understanding source in a design process. 

Her context of research is currently focused on healthcare, particularly cardiovascular disease prevention, due to its high complexity characteristics- once this domain can be tackled, other simpler domain can be approached easier. 

She has interviewed 40 design experts both from industry and academia all over the world, to learn their strategies of including large or big data in a design process, where designers tended to use insights from 12 people. Then now she is applying the knowledge from the design experts to mater graduation projects to improve the guideline.
