Ir. Klitsie, J.B.

Barend Klitsie is a PhD student at the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering. He studies how the infrastructure of service organisations can be (re)designed to realise design driven transformation. His research topics therefore include innovation implementation, organisation design, the valley of death, transformation through design and design innovation. His PhD research is practice-driven and he takes an Action Research approach.

Academic Background

Barend holds a BSc in Industrial Design Engineering and a master’s degree Strategic Product Design, both from Delft University of Technology. He also participated (for his Minor) in courses at the Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya (Barcelona). During his education, he took an internship at a Private Equity firm (NPM Capital) and was owner and Managing Director of his own student employment agency. However, he found most satisfaction in contributing to strategy and design innovation projects at Unilever, Innovation Booster and SKF. This experience has led to a PhD research project which is performed in close collaboration with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, where he assumed various roles as design innovation trainer/coach and interim manager of an innovation hub.
