Dr. A. (Achilleas) Psyllidis

Profile

Achilleas Psyllidis is an Assistant Professor of Location Intelligence and Spatial Analysis and Director of the Urban Analytics Lab at Delft University of Technology. He is also the Director of the Social Urban Data Lab at the Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions. He is further affiliated with the Leiden-Delft-Erasmus Centre for BOLD Cities.

His research bridges urban planning & design, sustainable urban mobility, and spatial analytics. He investigates how the design, structure, and perceived qualities of the urban environment affect the mobility outcomes and accessibility opportunities of different population groups. He focuses on active travel modes like walking and biking, as well as the role of mobility systems and land-use distribution in promoting place-based encounters and interactions among individuals and groups (co-accessibility). Additionally, his work includes critical assessments of sustainable neighborhood development models, such as the concept of the 'X-minute City'.

To realize these objectives, he develops human-centric models and measures of pedestrian accessibility to essential services and amenities. These measures are subsequently integrated into open-source software tools (e.g., CTwalk Map), facilitating the design, planning, and policy toward more livable and inclusive communities. Aligned with this goal, he participates in and leads several Dutch, European, and international research projects on cities, mobility, environmental exposures, health, and well-being. Additionally, he is a member of TU Delft’s ‘Pathways to Mobility Futures’ Vision Team.

    CTwalk Map: Best Demo Award

CTwalk Map is an interactive web tool that unveils the potential of social encounters and access inequities in urban neighborhoods by leveraging open-access data. Drawing on information from various open sources, including population, location, and pedestrian network data, the tool estimates the number of individuals across different age groups who can reach city destinations within a 5 or 15-minute walk, highlighting opportunities for social cohesion and disparities in access.
