Biography

Dr. Abhigyan Singh is a post-doctoral researcher at the Design Conceptualization and Communication section of the faculty of Industrial Design Engineering, TU Delft. He is involved in Interegg funded ‘ENERGE-Energizing Education to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions’ project. Abhigyan identifies himself as a trans-disciplinary design researcher who enjoys exploring the mutual convergence of design, anthropology, energy studies, and emerging technologies.

In early 2019, Abhigyan defended his doctoral dissertation, ‘Conceptualizing inter-household energy exchanges: An anthropology-through-design approach’. The findings from his research were exhibited at Dutch Design Week 2017 and have been awarded Delft Global Seed Fund (2017), Design United’s Demonstrator Fund (2017), and Delft Design for Values - Subsidy (2019). His doctoral research builds upon the works of economic anthropologists and investigates social and cultural dimensions of energy exchanges between households.

In 2010, Abhigyan graduated with Master of Arts in New Media Design from Aalto University School of Art, Design and Architecture, Helsinki, Finland. His master’s thesis (‘Design Opportunities and Challenges in Indian Urban Slums – Community Communication and Mobile Phones’) was awarded the highest grade (5/5) and ‘Department of Media-Stipend.' The thesis was exhibited and awarded Second Prize at CUMULUS 20th Anniversary Exhibition (‘Young Creators for Better City & Better Life’) hosted by Tongji University in combination with Shanghai World Expo 2010 held in Shanghai, China.

Abhigyan holds a bachelor’s degree in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) from Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information and Communication Technology (DA-IICT), India. Before entering academia, he used to work as a User-Interface Designer at Infosys Technologies Limited in India. As part of his professional role at Infosys, he has worked on the various design aspects of IT applications for multinational clients such as Bank of America, Kmart & Sears (USA), ABN-AMRO Bank, BNSF Railways (USA), and Pfizer.

Abhigyan is an active member of ‘Energy as connection’ working group of ‘Club van Wageningen’, an energy transition network that brings together energy industry and researchers in The Netherlands. He is also one of the organizers of EthnoBorrel, a network of professional ethnographers, which aims to strengthen the value of ethnography in the Netherlands and beyond.
