Prof. Ir. van Dijk, M.B.

Matthijs van Dijk is Professor of Mobility Design at the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering and his main interests are Design methodology and Design processes in relation to the field of Mobility and Citizen engagement.

Academic Background

Matthijs (1965) completed his Master degree in Mechanical Engineering as precision engineer (mechatronics & robotics) at the University of Technology Eindhoven, the Netherlands. Interested in product design, he decided to follow a post-graduate course in consumer products at the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering, Delft University of Technology.

In 1992 he founded his Amsterdam based design consultancy, Reframing Studio. He was also one of the founders and board members of the Design and Emotion Society. In the same year he accepted a part time position as assistant professor at the Delft University of Technology. In 2003 he was appointed Professor of Applied Design. One of the areas Matthijs is responsible for is Mobility Design. In recent years the scope of this field has expanded. As well as conducting research into the movement of people and goods, Matthijs is also exploring other fields like social mobility and financial mobility. Matthijs’ research embraces the complexity of the entire mobility system. Also a connection was established with the research theme ‘People in Transit’. In 2017 his chair was renamed ‘Mobility Design’.

Matthijs is a frequent speaker and a highly regarded member of a number of juries and committees.  In 2011 Matthijs published the book “Vision in Design, a guidebook for innovators” about the design method, ViP (Vision in Product Design), which  he devised together with colleague and co-author Professor Paul Hekkert.
