Challenge

One of the biggest challenges with implants is the risk infections that might arise only after the procedure. It is important to treat infections as soon as possible and in the right way. The challenge of this project was to create an embodiment of a smart device that is implanted with the prosthesis integrating different sensors enable to detect early infection in an existing knee prostheses.

Result

The Smart Knee is a smart device concept integrating different sensors like glucosemeter and pHmicrosensors able to detect infections in an early stage. The device is implanted with the knee prosthesis and communicates in close proximity with an external device (e.g. a mobile phone) to read out the measurements.
