How can we make better use of the resources on earth, concerning consumer products, services, beliefs and behaviours? Let's RE(d)USE looks into material usage, extended lifetime of product, re-use and recycling going as far as the concepts of the circular economy.
In this research platform we bring the ‘people’, ‘technology’ and the ‘business’ perspective of IDE into the design of circular and sustainable products. For the technology perspective, we build on the work on Design for Sustainability, where we have developed methods for sustainable design, knowledge on life cycle assessment, design for recycling, energy efficient design, product life extension and the monitoring of e-waste flows. The people perspective is represented in all three departments, for instance in projects such as Living Lab and SusLab (which provides an infrastructure for field studies on home resource management) and in research on product attachment and sustainable behavioural change.
Through this research platform, we generate insights and foresights on:
- how to design products that fit seamlessly into a circular system (i.e., that people can and will use for a long time and that can eventually be recycled);
- how to reduce energy consumption and create energy efficient use.
