Dr. Karana, E.

Associate Professor
Emerging Materials, Design Engineering

Biography

Elvin Karana is Associate Professor in the department of Design Engineering (DE) at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), the Netherlands.

Elvin graduated from the Industrial Design department, of the Middle East Technical University (METU), with a ‘high’ honours degree, as the best graduate of Industrial Design in 2002. She has earned her Master’s degree from the same university in 2004. She undertook her PhD research at the TU Delft, where she developed a ‘Meaning Driven Materials Selection Tool’ to support designers in their materials selection activities. Since then, she has been leading a number of research projects focusing on design for material experiences. In her work, she proved the notion of ‘materials experience’ to be actionable in design thinking and applicable to both in design practice and design research.

She is one of the founders of the Natural Fibre Composites (NFC) Design Platform in The Netherlands (2010). She developed and coordinated the Materials Library: Made Of.. at the faculty of Industrial Design Engineering, TU Delft, between 2011-2015. Elvin is the main editor of 'Materials Experience: Fundamentals of Materials and Design' (2014, Elsevier).
